November 2nd 2012. Waikiki - Then & Now.

Four stamps in two pairs were issued on November 2nd 2012 depicting Waikiki - then and now.

Over the years, one and two story buildings in Waikiki have largely been demolished and replaced with high rises or large commercial properties. The Canlis Restaurant was a high class eatery on the corner of Kalakaua Avenue and Kalaimoku Street. Built in 1954, the building itself won many awards for its architecture. But this did not stop it being demolished in 2002 and replaced by an upscale shopping center. Tiffany & Co., the jewelers, now stands where Canlis once stood.

Similarly, the Waikiki Theatre at 2284 Kalakaua Avenue was a beautiful art deco building which first opened in 1936 and closed in 2002. The interior is shown above, with a rainbow over the screen and imitation plants and palm trees on the sides. It was demolished in 2005 to make way for a shopping center of little architectural merit. Not much survives of yesteryear’s architecture in Waikiki. Money is king and the gross receipts per square foot have sadly become more important than the architecture or anything else.

Each stamp of the $6 stamp pair (above top) prepays the Overnight rate. It shows the former Canlis Restaurant (left) on the corner of Kalakaua Avenue and Kalaimoku Street, which was built in 1954. It was demolished in 2002 so they could build the Tiffany & Co. jewelry store (right) which now stands in its place.

Each stamp of the $9 stamp pair (above bottom) prepays the Same Day rate.It shows the grand art deco building of the Waikiki Theatre (left) which opened in 1936. It was demolished in 2005 to be replaced by a shopping center called "The Center of Waikiki" (right).

The special postmark for this issue (above) depicts the award-winning architecture of the former Canlis Restaurant - now demolished.
