January 20th 2009. Inauguration of President Barack Obama.

Two stamps in a diptych and a minisheet were issued on January 20th 2009 to celebrate the Inauguration of President Barack Obama in Washington D.C. the same day.

The two stamps are part of one design (called a diptych). The photo* shows Barack Obama raising his right hand as he is sworn in as the 44th President of the U.S.A. by Chief Justice John G. Roberts Jr. on January 20 2009. Barack's wife Michelle is by his side as the great event is happening.

This issue is very relevant to Hawai'i as Barack was born and raised in Honolulu. We won't go into details here about Barack's life as much is written elsewhere. Try this webpage for a start:

The $9 stamp (above left) prepays the Same Day rate. It shows Barack Obama being sworn in as the new President.

The $6 stamp (above right) prepays the Overnight rate. It shows his wife Michelle looking on with great pride.

The $9 minisheet (above) prepays the Same Day rate. It shows the same photo as the stamps but without perforations and with different text and placement.

The special postmark for this issue depicts an outline of the White House, Obama's new home.

* The photo was taken by Master Sgt. Cecilio Ricardo of the U.S. Air Force. The photo was taken as part of his official duties and is the property of the U.S. Government and therefore in the public domain.
